Metro Board to Study Red Line Vehicle and Bike Parking Options

The Metro Board of Directors approves looking for ways to expand vehicle and bike parking at the Red Line's North Hollywood and Universal City/Study City stations.

Lack of parking at the Red Line's stations in North Hollywood and Universal City/Studio City is holding back the potential to increase ridership on Metro's busiest transit line in the entire MTA system, and officials are well aware, according to The Source.

A report is due back to the Metro Board of Directors in March 2014 after the board approved Dec. 5 to research both short-term and long-term ways to increase parking availability at the two stations. The motion was introduced by board members Paul Krekorian, Eric Garcetti and Zev Yaroslovsky.

One of the major issues holding back ridership is that both station parking lots are filled to capacity by 7 a.m. daily, according to Metro. There's also a lack of connectivity between to and from the stations.

Options to be explored for North Hollywood and the Universal City/Studio City stations could be expanding additional parking on vacant land (a benefit to the North Hollywood station), construction of a multi-level parking garage and providing public parking as part of a joint development. Feedback on bicycle and pedestrian improvement for those stations will also be researched.
