Statewide Flex Alert Continues Until 6 p.m.

LADWP asks you to stay cool, but conserve power.

With triple digit temperatures expected again today in parts of L.A., the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) asks customers to conserve energy use where possible, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. today, while staying safe.

A statewide Flex Alert has been issued for tomorrow by the California Independent System Operator (CAL ISO) and electricity conservation is encouraged today.  LADWP joins CAL ISO in this call, asking customers for conservation to prevent overtaxing the electrical infrastructure that serves Los Angeles around the clock daily.

Energy demand in Los Angeles is expected to reach near record usage—about 5900 megawatts—as the heat wave reaches its peak intensity between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys.  LADWP’s all-time high energy demand was 6177 megawatts, recorded on September 27, 2010.

Heat-Related Power Outages

Despite the high temperatures, the LADWP system has functioned well and power outages have been minimal, however hot weather can lead to outages- and for a variety of reasons. The heat not only leads to more people operating their air conditioners all at once but also causes other appliances to work harder in order to perform. This puts strain and stress on electrical infrastructure and can overburden power lines, transformers and other equipment, causing them to fail. It can also trigger substation circuit breakers or other electrical equipment that is designed to protect the system to shut down automatically before serious damage occurs.

Energy Conservation Tips

To help reduce energy use, LADWP recommends the following as highly effective conservation measures:

  • Adjust thermostat to 78 degrees to reduce energy usage during the hottest hours of the day when air conditioning systems have to work hardest to cool.
  • Limit the use of appliances during peak hours of the day- use washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other heavy appliances during evening hours.
  • Close draperies, shades or blinds during the heat of the day to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight.
  • Ventilate your home by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate.
  • Turn off lights and equipment when they are not in use.
  • Unplug "energy vampires" like  cell phone chargers, DVD players, microwave ovens and other appliances that use energy even when turned off or in sleep mode.

LADWP offers these tips to help conserve energy and stay cool at home and in the workplace.

The City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department (EMD) recommends the following during periods of extreme heat, to avoid heat exhaustion, heat cramps and sunstroke:

  • Drink plenty of water; don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure; wear a hat, preferably with a wide brim, when in the sun and use sunscreen.
  • Avoid unnecessary physical exertion if you are outside or in non-air conditioned buildings. If you are working outdoors, take frequent rest and refreshment breaks in a shaded area.
  • Never leave children, elderly people or pets unattended in closed cars or other vehicles.
  • Check on those who are at high risk to make sure they are staying cool – including seniors who live alone, people with heart or lung disease, and young children.
  • Stay cool indoors – if your home is not air conditioned, visit public facilities such as shopping malls and libraries to stay cool.

In Case of Power Outage

LADWP has an excellent record of reliable power service. Nonetheless, extreme weather like heat introduces increased risk of power service interruptions.

If you have a power outage, please follow these tips:

  • Call 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397) to report an outage and also for updates on anticipated service restorations.
  • Stay calm.
  • Turn off or disconnect any appliances and electronic equipment that were in use when the outage began.
  • Leave a light or lamp turned on to serve as an alert when service is restored.
  • Leave refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep contents as fresh as possible.
  • Have a flashlight and extra batteries handy. Never use candles in a power outage or other emergency.

The signs are everywhere! Please vote for Wendy, Nora. He is also running ads about Wendy GreuelRead More that he knows are outright lies.
Nora Doyle May 20, 2013 at 06:31 pm
It really ticked me off to see those signs cluttering up our public spaces. I'm still undecided whoRead More to vote for, and I emailed his campaign to tell them that is is just the kind of thing that would prevent me from voting for him unless the signs disappeared by election day. I'm glad I'm not the only one to email them about it.
Jo Perry May 20, 2013 at 05:51 pm
Wendy Greuel was incredibly efficient and responsive when she represented our district. I'm sorry,Read More Leah, that your concerns were not answered. I know she worked closely with the SCRA to improve Studio City. She will will be the same way as Mayor! Vote Wendy Greuel.

Those of us who are more familiar with the genes which statistics have shown are most likely to formRead More breast and ovarian cancer understand the choices--certainly better for me than before I was diagnosed and knew so little. I am fortunate that there is no history of cancer of women in my family.

She has received a lot of flak about making a premature decision...I hope someone from OvarianRead More Cancer or the community weighs in on this and gives their thoughts in a blog! Thanks...just click the START BLOGGING button below! THANKS!

ok. have now spent some time navigating the new patch. i hope everyone will give it a chance. it'sRead More growing on me. i think once everyone is more familiar with the new version they'll like it too.
Irene DeBlasio May 17, 2013 at 04:09 pm
@MikeSzymanski I must admit that I haven't been able to detect a new format. Where is the format?Read More Who designed this? All I can tell is that there is a beautiful shot of trees -- perfect! Under that banner all hell breaks lose and you can't tell what you're looking it. There might be a huge blowup of Mr. Walker or a too big notice of something official-looking -- possibly an agenda. I have not been able to navigate through all the stuff. Lots of white space on either side which gives me impression that we're tailoring a community paper more toward an iphone or smart phone (or a tablet). Maybe I need a GPS to find a good list of contents here. In the meantime, it's not very attractive (exception for the banner trees photo) nor entertaining and not very informative. Scotty Reston, where are you now that we need you?

the picture selected is nice and it well suits the page. it would be nice to see the full pic. tooRead More bad so much of it is blocked from the top portion of the content....any chance of seeing the full picture and starting the content beneath it?
Barbara Krause May 17, 2013 at 08:00 am
I find this very disconcerting. Mel Randall who is on the Land Use Committee was asked to submit hisRead More name. We assumed qualifications would be checked and then those best suited would be chosen. Two entries of the same name is in itself so bad makes me feel that all of this should be redone.

I was at the meeting last night and saw all I need to see on how our neighborhood council work. TheyRead More had a drawing for the grievance panel. WHAT A SHAM!! They drew 1 guys name twice and rather than stop the proceedings and make sure that the names in the hat were legitimate and no other duplicates exist and redo the drawing, they just drew another name. Now it probably was just a fluke but the appearance of a rigged drawing is there and it taints the whole council and it proceedings. It is very apparent why we need a grievance panel in the first place. When the appearance of corruption exists at the lowest levels of our democratic process it is no wonder that the whole system is collapsing before our eyes. Our neighborhood council should hang their heads in shame!

Don't see any box. The ads are the only items large and bright enough to read and they cover mostRead More everything.
