Studio City Under One City District? What Do You Think?

Lisa Sarkin gives her advice and reports on redistricting meetings coming up.

Do you have a question about Studio City? Community activist Lisa Sarkin is answering questions about history and issues in our area in this   column. She often knows who to call, and where to go in order to get things done. Send your questions to Studio City Patch editor   or leave it in the Comments section below. Thanks!

Please weigh in on the poll below!

I want to bring to your attention the Redistricting Process now going forward within the City of Los Angeles.

Currently, Studio City is split up into three districts – District 2, 4 and 5.  The community has been successful keeping Studio City whole in the state and county districts.

I want Studio City to be part of one City Council District.  You can have your views heard.

The citizens of California voted to have the districts drawn by a citizens’ commission and that process is now underway for the City of Los Angeles.  You have the ability to comment on this process.

The closest Redistricting Commission meeting to Studio City will be held on January 3, 2012 at the Van Nuys City Hall.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to let your voice be heard.

Date:          Jan. 3

Time:         6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Location:   Van Nuys City Hall

14410 Sylvan Street, Van Nuys  91401

You may want to visit the Redistricting Commission website at www.redistricting2011.lacity.org

I am appalled that political considerations seem to be more important than retaining the integrity of the residential and business community of Studio City. Why would we want or need THREE Council members? This is overkill! No wonder the public gets sick and tired of career politicians who play musical chairs in order to get another paid-up pension.
Barry Johnson December 26, 2011 at 11:13 pm
You are all insane. There isn't one, not one, time Studio City has benefited from three City Councilmembers. This just shows how many truly uninformed people there are. Thank God we were victorious in keeping Studio City whole for the State and County Redistricting recently completed. The same thing now must happen for the City Council. The current CD2, CD5 and CD4 are the most obscene gerrymandering map shapes you've ever seen. Our community, and many others, were truly asleep at the wheel 10 years ago. We should have challenged the 2000 maps... we would have won. Thank God the City has Neighboprhood Councils this time, because this obscenity will never happen again because of the N/C's . Mark my word!

Each City Council member is making about $179,789 a year plus incredible perks (some reports say that each member has eight cars with parking meter immunity). Apparently we have the highest paid City Council in the country. Barry Johnson is right! Our Neighborhood Councils are doing a great job and they REALLY represent us.

Seems to me like if we don't like whjat one councliman says we cna go to another one. Isn't that what the council does? And we have 3 of the 15 coming right to our door rather than 1 in 15 to have our ear.

If ANYBODY would know this, Barry would...he's attended NC meetings since the beginning, and has been at all of the redistricting meetings.
Lisa Sarkin December 27, 2011 at 06:46 pm
Usually the largest council district's section of a councilmember's district takes over an area split into more than one district, but I think you will agree that being part of the council districts over the hill, leaves two sections of Studio City way out away from the councilmember because of the few number of voters in the Studio City area in their council districts.
Mike Szymanski (Editor) December 27, 2011 at 10:04 pm
This is definitely a hot topic! Earlier today the poll showed that people liked being divided, now, it seems like most want to keep it one community...but it's close! Have you voted? Please do! And tell us what you think below in the COMMENTS area.

The problem becomes more evident with each election. We seem to elect the professional politicians and then are surprised at the results, which seem to more decline, more decay, more density, more inefficiency, etc. I long for the days of Joel Wachs who actually fought the established groups in City Hall and kept Studio City one great place that attracted many of those who still choose to not flee for other places. The real problem is not the single district but something far worse: Los Angeles has a system of govt that is designed for corruption and incompetence and it is very successful. The irony is that the system of having no one person in charge of anything specific was designed as a result of fighting corruption in the 30 and 40's. We need a strong mayor, and alderman system of actual citizens.not the 15 people and weak mayor we have now...

amen.... How about Studio City as its own city?...I know the LA City laws have been conveniently stacked to prevent this ever from happening but just think of the wonderful consequences of it happening..I say Succession NOW!!!.
Skraeling January 31, 2012 at 09:09 pm
The Valley voted for it but the money from developers and unions beat it up at the polls. We would be a far better place had we seceded....And, LA might be as well.....
Skraeling January 31, 2012 at 09:11 pm
and Wendy Gruel is playing them like a fine violin....we do not need professional polticians ambitious to move up the food chain...
