American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Studio City-North Hollywood

The charity awareness run is set for May at Walter Reed.

The Relay For Life of Studio City‐North Hollywood will be held on May 19‐20, at . Teams of 5-20 people create a relay by taking turns walking, running, or strolling around the school track for 24 consecutive hours. Participants will camp out with family and friends, enjoying music, entertainment, food, and friendship while building team spirit to help in the fight against cancer.

The event’s 24 hours symbolize the difficulties cancer patients can face in just one 24‐hour period. We honor cancer survivors at opening ceremonies at 9:00 AM as they walk the traditional first lap. At 9:00 p.m. the lights go out for our Luminaria (candle lighting) ceremony where we honor those who have won the battle and remember those who didn’t. The event culminates with a powerful Fight Back Closing Ceremony as we continue in the fight even after Relay is over. This 24‐hour celebration unifies the Studio City‐North Hollywood communities for a cause that touches everyone. Relay for Life will make you laugh and cry, and will definitely be an experience of a lifetime.

Wade Trefethen, this year’s team development chair, will be participating in his 5th Relay for Life. “I first got involved with the event because it was such a fun community event that allowed me to camp over night,” Wade says. “The past couple years, my reasons unfortunately changed. My Uncle Gordon passed away after a nine-month struggle with esophageal cancer. After being diagnosed, everything seemed to happen so quickly. It was hard to see him every 4-6 weeks changing for the worst. I dedicate this year to my Uncle, others who I have lost, and to all those who are struggling with this disease.”
