Colfax Rocks the House Tonight!

Woodstock comes to Valley Village with 21 kids’ bands.

If you’re anywhere near the corner of Colfax Avenue and Addison Street tonight, that won’t be your neighbor’s boom box that you hear blaring. It’s Rockin’ for Colfax, the second annual event featuring kids’ bands to raise money for the arts.

Twenty-one kids’ bands, the Colfax enrichment guitar class, and two adult bands will be performing live rock & roll at Colfax Charter Elementary School – 11724 Addison Street in Valley Village. Burbank Music Academy has coached the kids for five weeks so students as young as 5 years old can play keyboards, bass, guitar, drums or sing lead vocals. BMA donates their instructors, expertise, time, instruments, and even equipment including the stage for several schools every year at absolutely no cost. All money goes directly to fund school arts programs.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and the first band goes up at 4:45 p.m. Tickets are $5 and for sale at the entrance, which is through the Colfax Avenue parking lot. Guests should bring blankets, beach chairs and jackets.  Obviously alcohol and mind-altering chemicals are strictly forbidden at this kid-friendly event.

Limited quantities of Rockin’ for Colfax t-shirts and sweatshirts will be for sale, and there will be booths set up for hair flair and temporary tattoos.

Fans are encouraged to bring their wallets and their appetites. A variety of food will be available for purchase, including an Italian dinner of pasta with pink cream sauce, salad, and garlic bread; taquitos, tamales, (pineapple, pork or chicken), rice, and beans; or pizza. A huge array of baked goods will be offered, as well as water, sodas, and hot chocolate with whipped cream. Starbucks coffee has been donated by Starbucks at Riverside Drive and Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Valley Village, Alameda Avenue and San Fernando Road in Burbank, and Paseo and Colorado Avenue in Pasadena.

Raffle tickets will be for sale throughout the event. Prizes include: two tickets to see Van Halen on June 1 at Staples Center; two tickets to see Roger Waters on May 19 at the LA Memorial Coliseum; Free admission to MOCA; 4 tickets to the Museum of Music in Carlsbad and a gift basket; $25 gift card to "Howl at the Moon" Dueling Piano Bar in Universal City; dinner for two at Café Cordiale in Sherman Oaks; neon Ugg-style boots, AC/DC wallet; butterfly necklace basket; a disco ball; Wizards of Waverly Place children's guitar; Cars children's guitar; and a canvas CFC 70 electric guitar.

The chance to participate in Rockin’ for the Arts was available to the first 100 students who signed up, which happened almost immediately. Colfax teachers and faculty have also formed a band called DJ Grammatical & the Spelling Errors. They will be playing Boogie Oggie Oogie. The second adult band is made up of Colfax parents who are also professional vocalists and musicians, including Dan Boul, Deana Carter, Mark Goldenberg, Kirk Hellie, Dusty Wakeman and Brian Mendes. They call themselves The PTA Alternates and they’ll be playing a surprise rock repertoire. The emcees will be the very funny and energetic Keythe Farley and Leroy Edwards. Sponsors for this year’s Rockin for Colfax are Balloon Decorations ‘R’ Us, Capella Salon, Café Cordial, Howl at the Moon, Abex Exhibit Systems, and Silly Monkey, Inc.
