Laurence School’s 300 students students and their teachers took a trip back to 1953, sporting poodle skirts and James Dean garb to celebrate the school's 60th Anniversary Friday, February 1.
Laurence School, which serves students in K-6th grade, was started by Marvin Jacobson with 12 students in a two–room schoolhouse built behind his parents’ home, located on a ¾ acre in Valley Glen.
The school is still at this location, just north of Sherman Oaks. However, with the purchase of surrounding property, Laurence now boasts a 4-acre campus with state-of-the art technology center, 20,000 volume library and 10,000-square foot Sports and Performing Arts Center.
“Mr. J,” as students call him, and his wife and school co-founder, Lynn Jacobson, are still daily fixtures on campus. Their daughter, Lauren Wolke, is the head of school.
