Mason Shefa Wins Gold Medal in Art

Young filmmaker, a senior at Oakwood met Tom Hanks.

Mason Shefa, 18, a senior at Oakwood School, has won the National Gold Medal Scholastic Award in Art. Mason was one of 15 students to be selected from more than 185,000 students nationwide.

An artist, he included eight poetic movies in his portfolio when he entered the competition. Some of his most recent works are displayed on his website.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious awards for creative teens in the United States and the largest source of scholarship funds for young artists and writers. Winners are awarded cash prizes.

The student also shot a movie called Arterial Deposition in Thought and Being for the Harvard-Westlake Film Festival, and met Tom Hanks two years ago (see photo).

Mason certainly makes the grade as a local
