Valley View Newsletter: Craft Bus, Cookies Needed and More

See what's going on in one of the Valley's smallest public schools.

Save the date for -Rama on Friday September 28th! This fun evening will be the first event of the school year and the kick-off to the, which runs until Wednesday October 3.

Our children, parents, faculty and staff all come to the auditorium in their jammies, with blankets and stuffed animals, and sit on the floor to listen to children's books read from the stage. Not at fundraiser, just a community-building Fun-Raiser! So simple and perfect that we've even been recognized in a nation-wide PTO Today magazine contest for our Outstanding Family Event (see here link:http://www.ptotoday.com/pgy/winners).

It's the first time we work together as a community, have a little fun, donate items, make some money, and volunteer our time. Once you try it, you'll be hooked!

We will need cookie donations, help to sell pizza, make cocoa and serve cookies. And we'll need lots of volunteers to run the book fair, and we'll need everyone to open their checkbooks to buy books. Let's pull together and show our dedication to literacy and fun in reading!

Friday September 28. Pizza and water sold for a buck each from 5-6pm, doors open at 5. Fun readings 6-7pm. Free hot cocoa and cookies at 7pm. Save the date!

Last week's PTA IDEA meeting was very exciting to be a part of, and I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts!

Thanks also to everyone who came to Back-to-School Night last week. The enormous turn-out proves once again that parental involvement is critical to our community!

ENRICHMENT CLASSES Provided by CICA Grant

Did you know...

Our 5th and 6th graders have begun their 10 week coursework of Ballroom Dancing, funded by a generous grant from CICA.

Dancing Classrooms Los Angeles' mission is to help build social awareness, confidence, self-esteem, and other essential life skills in young people through the practice of social dance, while at the same time, eliminating bias and promoting positive human relations by teaching them how to respect themselves and others who are different from them. Dancing Classrooms is not just about teaching dance, it is about teaching pride, confidence and respect.

Starting next week...

You'll be seeing the Side Street Projects bus on campus. The Woodworking Bus & Trailer program teaches children that art is about ideas and creative problem solving, rather than merely representing the naturalistic world in 2 dimensions. These are mobile wood shops aboard renovated transit buses and mobile studio trailers, where kids learn about art, design, and engineering using only hand tools, raw materials, and their imagination. Each station is equipped with saws, hand drills, screwdrivers, supplies and materials.

Thank you to CICA for their generous funding of Arts in Education at Valley View!  AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES Enroll Now!

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something
Barbara Krause May 21, 2013 at 07:58 pm
Oh, it was under announcements and not opinion so that is why I did not understand the post whichRead More appeared as facts.
John Walker May 21, 2013 at 05:14 pm
Presumptuous? What about my "endorsement" is presumptuous. You don't really need toRead More respond😃, I just didn't understand the comment.
Barbara Krause May 21, 2013 at 09:06 am
Somewhat presumptuous this early on Voting Day.

I attended N.H.H.S. in the mid-seventies. Mr. Reeves and Mr. Moelter were two of my favorites.Read More Loved Mr. McLeroy for Sociology.
Kim Phillips-Clark December 19, 2012 at 07:25 pm
great article Mary! Ms. Korney, she sometimes scared me to death! But always around christmas IRead More think of her and pronounce my letters clearly at the end of a word when I sing. I can still remember the song I had to sing for my final, "If ever I would leave you..." She taught me a lot. I agree with everything you said about Mr. Reeves. I had Mr. Pesin for Algebra, he did nothing to help further my math skills. The biggest flirt around, ick. We had a girl in school at the time that flirted her way to an A and hardly ever went to class. Go figure!! I also thought quite highly of Ms. Requiam. Glad she's still around.

Alex Daniels May 21, 2013 at 09:05 pm
I also notice Wendy Gruel has no platform, except taking money from special interest (most notablyRead More her puppet masters at the DWP) and having one of the most negative campaigns I've ever seen......no thanks, negative Wendy, fool me once.....Eric is our next Mayor....
Jo Perry May 20, 2013 at 08:27 pm
The signs are everywhere! Please vote for Wendy, Nora. He is also running ads about Wendy GreuelRead More that he knows are outright lies.
