PTA News Voting Meeting!
Special PTA meeting this Wednesday 5/2! Critical services and programs are on the chopping block next school year due to severe budget cuts. You, the PTA, have worked very hard this year in fundraising, and now is the time to determine what we can do to make a difference with these funds. Please come be a part of these decisions which are critical to our school. Coffee and pastries will be served.
Staff Appreciation Day is coming up this Friday 5/4. If you would like to participate, please contact Catherine email@example.com or 323-854-0855 firstname.lastname@example.org. We will need specialty items from home to supplement the lunch items we have planned... anything homemade or special you'd like to bring to show you care! And we'll need people to serve. Please take this opportunity to appreciate our faculty and staff by helping make this luncheon special.SPRING FLING
What an incredible event! Fantastic turn-out! And fun was had by one and all!
We saw Valley View families, alumni families, incoming families, and families from other schools... You invited your family and your friends from scouts and athletic teams... We saw people who frequent the park just drop in for a sno-cone and popcorn, and people who saw our articles in Studio City Patch and the Tolucan Times who came by for a pulled pork sandwich. Just fantastic turn-out.
Our Kindergarteners performed wonderfully, our talented upper graders were stars, the pie-eating contest was a riot, the pirates were a hit, the cheerleaders rocked it, the folkloric dancing was beautiful, the capoeira and kung fu were inspiring.
There were winning booth games, each with a line waiting! The prizes were coveted, the cake walk was a cool and retro touch, the inflatables were buoyant, many kids walked away with bragging rights from the hi-striker, and we had the best face painting EVER!
The sno-cones were a great new touch, we couldn't make the popcorn fast enough, the baked goods were fantastic. The grill worked non-stop with hot dogs and corn on the cob. The pulled pork and pulled chicken with slaw were tasty delights.
Thank you to each and every parent, teacher, friend and family member who worked their time (and then some) at all of these activities. We had more people working than ever before. If you didn't already, get your Valley View Volunteer button from Bonnie or Catherine! Panther bucks will be distributed on Wednesday, one for each hour worked!
Thank you to the Student Council for making most of the signs and for working all day at the lemonade stand... future leaders we have there! Thank you to Ms. Hanlon and Ms. Hoeschen for organizing them!
Thank you to our games committee of Terry Maloy and Sandra Lady for organizing the games, and to each room parent who put all those plans into action. Thank you to Aliyah Bielma and Philip Pignotti for organizing the Face Painting, as well as our other artists: Shaunt Nigoghossian, Callie Zelniker, Ms. Hoeschen, art teacher Ms. Nelson, and Jennifer Graves. Thank you to Kelly Cole for her inspired idea and flawless execution of the Cake Walk, as well as to everyone who made and brought the delicacies for that activity and to our live musicians. Thank you to Lana Seredenko for keeping the booths stocked with prizes, and to Lissette Rivas for making dozens of confetti eggs which were the coveted prizes for some games.
Thank you to James George for stage managing the entertainment and running the sound system. Thank you to Marcia Tillman organizing the Kids Korral to keep our little ones safe. Thank you to Cas Hyman and Taylor Heredia for organizing the very successful Raffles. Thank you to Ariane Price who handled our first annual pie-eating contest, as well as covered with ticket sales and every other imaginable job before and during the festival. Thank you to Cristina Trinidad and Martin Vargas who spend the morning moving everything from storage to the park, and then continued to help throughout the event.
So many families worked the entire festival, always asking what they could do next to help... Lucie and Sean Murray, Mike and Michelle Szymanski, Caroline Pinkey, Sandra Lady, Robin Coles and Ray Caputo, Lisa Brunson-Perkins, Lina and Greg Kessman, Annica McCrudden, Anita Lyon, and Richard and Callie Zelniker.
Thank you to Carole Cain and her family Steve and Shannon who were the first to arrive and the last to leave, working from set-up to ticket sales to music to food to booths to load up and clean up.
Thank you to Terry Maloy and Bobby Petersavage at sno-cones, Donald Zappala at popcorn and Angela Zappala at bake sale, who never even took a break, just to make sure everyone was happy and fed.
Huge thank you to Catherine Glandon, who worked for days calling volunteers and kept everyone straight... even recruited random passers-by into covering needed positions. Insanely great work, Catherine!
Huge thank you to Steve Price and Amber Craine for organizing the hot food, which was delicious and extremely well-managed! Steve was planning and purchasing and cooking for days in preparation as well as day-of. And Amber managed the front line and kept the orders perfectly handled, as well as brought a crew of people who volunteered from set-up to every job during the festival to load up and clean up. Amazing work!
Huge thank you to Kathy Weiss and Matt Squires who arranged the donation of all tents, tables, chairs, coolers, and serving tanks from Siren Studios. NONE of this would have been possible without them.
*An extra special thanks to Bonnie George. Her tireless efforts, unflagging enthusiasm, and extraordinary coordinating skills made the event the success it was. Bonnie is a champion, and we thank her for all she does! F.H.FIELD TRIP HIGHLIGHT
Your PTA Dollars At Work
Yup, all that hard work you just did, all those hours of volunteering, your baked goods and donations... Everything you just did for the Spring Fling. It was worth it. Because THAT is how we fund field trips, workshops and assemblies throughout the year to enrich the educational experience for our children. And this is what we do it for, right!

FIVE QUESTIONS Disco DeeDee
My name is Ireri, but I am known as Miss DeeDee. I have been at Valley View since 2009. I originally started after-school with the LA's Best program working with Miss Emerald and kindergarten (currently 3rd grade now.) At the end of the '09 school year I was hired by the Valley View PTA to assist with kindergarten supervision for the 2010 school year. I love what I do and wouldn't change it for anything.Q1: What is your favorite occupation?DD: Teacher. I have always known since I was a small child that I was destined to work with kids in a school/learning capacity. After that I'd have to say stand up comic...although I gotta work on my public speaking scaredy catness... Q2: If you could travel to any place in time for just 24 hours, where would you go?DD: New York sometime in the late 70's. I'd head straight to Studio 54 and I'd get in. :) Disco is in my blood.
Q3: If you could trade places with any fictional character who would it be and why?DD: Lisbeth Salander. She is a bad ass. Even though she has been through stuff, she doesn't allow herself to be a victim and lives life on her own terms...to have that kind of strength would be awesome. Equally awesome would be to see how Lisbeth Salander deals with 40+ kindergarteners.
Q4: What was your first car?DD: I had a 1993 blue Dodge Caravan. It was huge and clunky but it got me and my friends to the beach just fine. Q5: How do you make your day more interesting?DD: I make up songs. I like to sing about what i'm doing..or gonna do, or how I'm feeling. I make up songs for the kids in kindergarten...ask around and i'm sure a kinder will be able to sing you a Miss DeeDee original jam.
