Summertime Commencement Exercises

Is it time for you to graduate? Are you ready for a summer transformation? What features and traits do you yearn to amend, alter, tweak?

Commencement season is upon us. It may seem scary to move on, yet can you remember what it was like to graduate?

Did you feel you were handed the world, anything and everything was possible, opportunities galore were at your beck and call, and you hungered to experience them all?

You never fully graduate from the school of learning, exploring, and discovering more about who you are, your dreams, capabilities, attributes.

Are you at the top of your game? Can you reach higher? What would it take to lift you to an advanced level?

What behaviors do you want to inaugurate, instigate, initiate? Which contrary actions will lead you on the path you pine for?

Do you long to speak up, emerge from the shadows, and finally be heard? Do you desire to be silent, still, and serene, honing your listening talents?

Do you covet a new passion or reawakening a latent pleasure? Do you wish to express your creativity by sculpting, writing, performing, dancing, singing, building, composing, cooking, decorating, painting?

Are there additional areas lying dormant? What’s on your bucket list? Do you crave reciting poetry on a public stage, playing an instrument, going on an African safari, riding a hot air balloon, climbing Mount Everest?

Is success at your fingertips? How do you define excellence? What is required to achieve your magnum opus? Is it optimum to enroll in classes, get on the spot training, step up your skill sets?

Rise to the occasion. You are up to the task. Consider your numerous qualities and decide how to best attain your aspirations.

Give worry to the wind. Release notions of failure, pain, and suffering. Invite the love, admiration, and appreciation in.

Embrace your vulnerability. Welcome your weaknesses. Let your guard down. Take that leap of faith. Allow your inner power and strength to help you soar beyond your imagination.

Cease having to be right, to win. Say adieu to the role of ‘Ms./Mr. Know It All.’ Celebrate differences in your cohorts. Don’t seek a clone. Champion your assets. Honor your greatness.

Repel the negativity. Arise out of the darkness and into the sunshine. Embrace the extended days and shorter evenings.

“Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Now is the perfect moment to effortlessly accomplish your goals.

What you manifest you become. Demonstrate patience, poise, confidence, brilliance, buoyancy, resilience, triumph. Exhibit joy, cheerfulness, enthusiasm, kindness, compassion, sincerity.

Follow the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln, who said, “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

On Wednesday June 5, from 5-10:00pm, you and a guest are cordially requested to attend a one night only art exhibition and sale of the ‘Bill and Lois Wilson Photographic Collection’ at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 Sepulveda, Brentwood, 90049.

The directors of the critically acclaimed documentary, Bill W., are releasing these never before published photographs. This affords collectors of fine art photography the unique prospect of bringing history into their own homes by purchasing these archival-quality limited edition prints.

The photos reveal an intimately human side of the co-founder of A.A. and the iconic figure named one of the most important people of the 20th century by Time magazine.

In many of the shots, Bill Wilson is seen at home -- playing the violin, relaxing with his wife, Lois, making coffee in his kitchen, walking in the woods, even lugging a crate of Coca-Cola from the trunk of his car.

“What we love about these photographs is that they allowed us to show Bill in his day-to-day life,” says Dan Carracino, co-director/producer of Bill W.

“Bill was an extraordinary person who left behind a remarkable legacy, but he was also a human being. One of the messages of the film is, Here’s a guy who was put on a pedestal—ironically, within an anonymous society—but who in reality was very human, with flaws and struggles of his own.”

Kevin Hanlon, co-director/producer of Bill W. reveals, “Our concern was, if we release these photos, are we contributing to the idolization?” He surmised, however, since much of the collection presents Bill as an ordinary person, it would actually serve to take him off the throne.

A portion of the proceeds go to support Writers in Treatment, a 501(c)(3) California nonprofit organization, and the REEL Recovery Film Festival, both founded by Studio City’s Leonard Buschel, co-host of the affair.

Sandwiches, salads, snacks, hot and cold beverages will be served. Live music by DIVINA. Plenty of free parking.

Honorary Event Committee includes: Studio City’s Ed Begley Jr., Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy creator), Katy Sagal, Michael Des Barres (Rock Icon), Tony Denison, Dr. Gabor Mate (author - In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts), and Carrie White (author – Upper Cut).
