The County Board of Supervisors Tuesday threw its weight behind a bid to bring the U.S. trials for the 2016 Olympic marathon to Los Angeles.

LA Marathon LLC has submitted a bid to USA Track & Field officials to host the trials to select the three men and three women to compete for the United States in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The trials would be held on March 12, 2016, the day before the LA Marathon.

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who recommended supporting the bid, said the planned route would pass Dodger Stadium, LA Live, the Coliseum and pass Hollywood landmarks.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and three-time Olympian and marathon runner Deena Kastor have already expressed    strong support for the bid, which is seen by many as a precursor to Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.
