Blog: Forced Organ Harvesting from Living People for Profit

It is unimaginable that in the 21st Century, the Chinese Communist Regime (CCR) has arrested innocent people in China, illegally detained them in labor camps where their organs were subsequently harvested for profit, and then cremated their bodies to destroy the evidence.  This crime against humanity is still happening, and it must end!

Why are we, Studio City residents, concerned about the inhumane violations of human rights that have taken place in China?  It's because we want to embrace the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  We want to stand alongside our fellow residents in our country (http://www.pointparknewsservice.com/2013/04/09/chinese-prisons-relive-torture-advocate-to-end-organ-harvesting/), other countries in the world, and the people in China to say to the CCR “Stop the practice of forced, live, organ harvesting!”  The CCR has literally made a business out of genocide, and it's been happening for over 10 years. We do not want history to repeat itself.  In the last century, medical doctors like Dr. Josef Mengele abused the medical profession during the Holocaust, and we said, “This shall never happen again!” 

Recently, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said about organ harvesting in China,  "If we don't care about things like [forced organ harvesting], what kind of country and people would we become?"

According to witnesses, this atrocious practice has been happening in China since 2001.  The CCR has been taking the organs or four groups of prisoners of conscience: Falun Gong (by far the most persecuted group), Tibetans, Uyghurs, and House Christians.  Based on the Chinese government’s estimate, approximately 70 to 100 million practitioners of Falun Gong have been subject to severe persecution in China since 1999.  This started when former President Jiang Zemin declared that he would eradicate Falun Gong in three months.  Today, Falun Gong not only continues to be practiced in China, but in more than 100 countries around the world, with clubs and associations existing in a range of cities, companies, universities, and other settings.

Falun Gong is an ancient Chinese spiritual discipline in the Buddhist tradition.  Pronounced "Fah-loon Gong," it consists of moral teachings, a meditation, and four gentle exercises that are a truly unique and highly effective way to improve your health and energy levels.  At the core of Falun Gong are the values of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance (or in Chinese, Zhen 真 Shan 善 Ren 忍).  The practice teaches that these are the most fundamental qualities of the universe, and takes them to be a guide for daily life and practice.

Evidence of forced organ transplantation increasingly garners international attention.  Momentum has been building among governments around the world to address transplant abuses in multiple countries.  David Shoebridge, a Greens member of the New South Wales Parliament, is behind the most recent action.  His proposed legislation, if passed, would make it a crime for New South Wales residents to receive trafficked organ specimens.  Similar legislation has been seen in Belgium, France, Canada, and Israel.  Moreover, in the last several months, the United States Congress, the European Union, and the Australian Parliament have all conducted hearings from experts on organ harvesting from Falun Gong detainees.  On March 21, 2013, the Australian Senate unanimously passed a motion urging the government to oppose the practice of organ harvesting in China.

One group, in particular, that is taking the CCR to task, and speaking out about these atrocities, has amassed a lot of evidence on the illegal organ harvesting:  Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH.)  During the past seven years, DAFOH has gained support from transplant surgeons, physicians, medical ethicists, government officials, lawyers, and academic institutions on four continents. 

In 2012, DAFOH spearheaded two US Congressional hearings on illegal organ harvesting and initiated an international petition drive to stop organ harvesting, which garnered over 250,000 signatures.  It also supported a Congressional “Dear Colleague” letter, which received 106 signers, asking the US State Department to reveal information it has on forced organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners in China.
