It's been said that Loteria Grill is the best Mexican food in L.A. Loteria is located on the corner of Ventura Blvd. and Laurel Canyon Blvd, Studio City. The space is big and bright, with lofty ceilings, skylights with alternating white and dark-red walls, tall potted trees and signature Loteria playing cards above the bar. Loteria's menu is based on the regional cuisines of Mexico where Jimmy Shaw, head chef and owner, grew up and learned to cook. Here you'll find unique dishes from Oaxaca, Yucatan, Mexico City, Veracruz and Bajio. For appetizers, the fried-cheese dish (chicharron de queso) is highly recommended, as is the chunky, spicy guacamole. Popular entrées include chicken enchiladas in a mole sauce, slow-roasted shredded pork in a banana leaf and tiny quesadillas with squash blossoms. Everything is served with rice.
