This half-assed "reporting" is the result of Patch outsourcing their content creation toRead More "news aggregators" in…India. No on-scene personnel, no cultural sensitivity, no "community-based" anything. If you want to know what's going on in Mumbai, or where Lisa Sarkin is gobbling up pizzas, then Patch is your place. Anything else, forget it.

..."one of two students at Banning High School in Wilmington who was sitting in the back rowRead More told NBC4 the impact was sudden, extremely painful and immediately ignited a fire." This is horrific... but, the first thing that came to my mind - I'm sure SEAT BELTS were nowhere to be seen. Just a metal tomb where bodies get tossed around like packages. WHY does “Click It or Ticket” not apply to buses. School buses in particular - although Metro buses ought to require them also. Is it that seat belts cost too much money? How much is a life worth? The medical bills incurred in this crash could probably install seat belts in 1000 buses. The minimum ticket cost of an adult seat belt violation in California is $142 and up, and a minimum of $445 for not properly restraining a child under 16. If the parent is not in the car, the driver gets the ticket. Who gets this ticket?

Just as researchers are starting to link earthquakes with fracking in Texas and surrounding states,Read More Southern California has four earthquakes in a month. Our city officials need to ban this needless, dangerous and largely unregulated business.

Carl, the quote of mine that you posted has to do with all people who have crossed the borderRead More illegally and not the parents of these kids. However, I do think that there is a good chance that the parents of these kids are illegal.

John, this is CNS's first report, on which I wrote the head. "An earthquake with an epicenterRead More in Westwood struck Los Angeles about 6:25 a.m. today, authorities said." Now, on to today's news, OK?

A physically abusive father and husband and some are concerned with citizenship? I think that you'reRead More missing the point here. Those that automatically assume undocumented when the surnames are Hispanic might have to rethink later this month when the Hispanic percentage in California surpasses the non-Hispanic white population.
Nanette Pastor-Hanna March 17, 2014 at 09:45 am
How does leaving the children with their grandmother constitute "protective custody" whenRead More the abusive parent knows the address of his mother/mother-in-law? This is yet another example of the incompetence of the social welfare system in Los Angeles! We need and deserve accountability. Moreover, the children deserve better than this!

This keeps happening in our city, the simple act of getting out of our cars. Perhaps lowering theRead More speed limit is in order, or something???
Shaye Nelson December 28, 2013 at 02:00 pm
While I agree drivers need to be more alert and drive more slowly, I also recommend people gettingRead More out of their cars remember to look for oncoming traffic before leaving their vehicle. I'm sure many of us have had to slam on our brakes or quickly change lanes to avoid a car door that has been suddenly opened into our path. Since the 2nd amendment states we all are entitled to an assault rifle, and more ammo than we needRead More to wipe out a herd of buffalo, where can I pick one up? This shooting madness is never going to end. Our country is doomed. The NRA is America's Al Quida. Period.
Joe Estez November 2, 2013 at 04:47 pm
Mary, I am sorry you can't get one in California, unless the weapon meets certain CaliforniaRead More specifications. They have been banned for sometime unless it has a fixed 10 round magazine. So, I guess that law didn't do much in this case. Even if you wanted to buy a bunch of ammunition, you can't find anywhere. Obama is the best gun and ammunition salesman in history. The answer is not more laws for the law abiding citizen. Once again the bad guys could care less about the law. It will be interesting to see where the weapon came from. Could always be one the government let walk?

Wow you never know what you had until it's gone. I moved to CA a couple of months ago but before IRead More moved I knew I would be living in this community. I was an avid reader of this patch for over a year to keep up with what was going on here while I was still on the east coast. I knew what middle school my daughter was going to attend and noticed the last name similar to who I was hoping would be my daughter's 8th grade math teacher when I applied to the Humanities Academy at Walter Reed but didn't think anything of it. Now I discover there is a relation between the two. BTW, she got in Humanities and yes Ms. S is her 8th grade math teacher...woo hoo! Reading this patch made me more comfortable with moving across the country because I felt part of this community without even being here. Now that I'm here and pretty much settled in and getting my routine together and my daughter has made a gazillion new friends at Reed I come to the site and discover it's time to say goodbye to Mike. Mike, even though we don't know each other you were like my comfort food when I would get anxiety about moving across the country. So I thank you and just know your talent and warmth reached me all the way across the country and now that I'm here I will continue to follow you on your new adventure (already subscribed..ha!). In the words of that great poet...Obi Wan Kenobi..."May the force be with you!"

I can't believe that an educational institution would so ignore the the effects of climate changeRead More and global warming by building a structure that goes against what we are trying to change! I still dont know where on earth they come from suddenly going from having enough parking spaces, toRead More suddenly needing 750 parking spaces for a total of 1080 for only 850 students, 1/3 of which dont even drive...Something is fishy here..I hope Harvard Westlake will rethink this outragious proposal and take a less destructive approach to fulfill their parking needs, whihc have yet to be numerically ascertained....they have plenty of space on their campus to building a scaled down parking garage...
