My wife and I were guests of Felice Orlandi and Alice Ghostly, when I first met him. Felice madeRead More pasta from scratch, perfect pasta, spiced with herbs from the garden he and Alice kept as a hobby. Felice regularly invited a crew of actors and funny men to his Wednesday luncheons. Sometimes Burt Reynolds or Everet Greenbalm (Mayberry RFD) or Charles Nelson Reilley might come. My first luncheon was dominated by pantomimes by Jonathan Winters who smoked imaginary cigars whole eating imaginary schlurping, with which he'd interrupt others and then apologize profusely, proclaiming himself a victim of a new spoon gifted him by the IRS. "You see, you have to schlurp hard to keep the spoon from swallowing all your damn soup!"

It's great to hear these local stories and how much people got the benefits of Mr. Winters forRead More free!! The locals were his test market!

I worked at the Vons in Toluca Lake from the late 70's to mid 80's. Jonathan Winters and HansRead More Conried both frequented the store and could be found any day of the week doing a stand up routine together in the produce section or meat dept. Everyone would gather round and you could hear roars of laughter from our customers and coworkers. Those were some good times!!

Annette and her mother ran the snack bar many times when her son and mine played Little League inRead More Encino. She and her mom always brought the lemonade because they had a lemon tree. I still make lemonade the "Annette" way, the most deliciious of lemonades. (One part lemon juice, one part sugar and four parts water.) In her memory I have shared this recipe.

I went to school with Annette on Hollywood Blvd. in the 50's. I did not know her or see much of herRead More in school, she was 3 years younger than me. I knew a lot of the older kids she worked with, we had a few of the Mousekeeters in our little private school in Hollywood. Our school went from the first through the twelve grades. Over half the kids in the school worked in show business and many of them had famous parents. It was a real fun school in the 50's because the students where different from kids in other schools in Hollywood and so much fun to be in school with.

As a native of the Chicago suburbs and frequent reader of the Sun-Times, Roger Ebert has a specialRead More place in my heart. He was ever inspiring in his last years especially. Great piece, Mike.

Seriously??? Patch has sunken to a new "journalistic" low by snagging a "story"Read More from the obit from another media outlet and making it into a headline story. Ridiculous and shameful.

Thanks for your feedback Penny. And as we all know, as we age, we have to deal with the death ofRead More our loved ones much more frequently. It's part of life, but that doesn't make it any easier....Thank you for being my friend.

Mary, I lost my mother in 1978 when she was only 59. So at 39, I set my mortality goal...I had toRead More live past 59. Now I'm coming up on 74 and have surpassed my goal. I've reset it several times, but now take each year as it come and passes. My mother and I had a basket full of issues. But as the only child she had, I stepped up and took care of her at the end and held her as she took her last breath. It was a very emotional moment in my life. Losing a parent is always difficult. You did it with grace. Penny

yvonne, i meant to ask you saturday, how is it going regarding your dad's passing?
Mike Szymanski (Editor) January 8, 2013 at 05:57 pm
Actually, it turns out that we compared notes and we met in the 1980s at a series of parties of pastRead More stars that Donald O'Connor held around his birthday for years, and came up with some photos of us talking together with my friend Marsha Hunt at those gatherings at a house in Sunland. So, thanks for re-introducing us, but turns out we knew each other back when BOTH of us lived in Studio City.

Gloria was a kind, appreciative and strong woman. As you can see in the Republic Pictures 75thRead More Anniversary event photo I posted, Gloria always "looked the part". I'm sorry to hear about her passing.
Linda Rubin January 7, 2013 at 08:39 pm
You can see what a colorful character she was in her post-Voluptua years from the pix I just addedRead More to this article of Gloria at our Patch party in 2011. She was a fan of our sites and promoted her own story to our editors. I'm sad to say goodbye to Gloria.
Linda Rubin January 7, 2013 at 08:32 pm
I first met Gloria when she attended a Thanksgiving Feast provided by Temple Beth Hillel in ValleyRead More Village. She was dressed in Native American costume. Mary, I am the son of Nina Strickland. She and my dad, Ed, went to Howard College in Birmingham,Read More Ala. with RG. Mom could tell some really interesting tales of their doings at the old Howard campus. RG would send mom and dad a Christmas card every year up until about 10 years ago. We actually visited his home in Studio City some time in the 60s I believe it was. He scared the heck out of me with his gruff voice but his kind hand was very relieving. Mom died this past Oct. 26. We had talked about RG just a few weeks before her death. We found many photos RG signed for mom. RG, a very gentile giant. Find me on FaceBook. Steve Strickland, Meridian, Idaho.

Andy was one of the regular shoppers at Gelson's on Laurel Canyon and Riverside Drive when he livedRead More in Toluca Lake. He mingled with others in the market and was always gracious and accessible. Last time I saw him, he and I were mock fighting over ears of corn. He was one of our treasures -- under-estimated by some Hollywood standards of superstardom but a giant of spirituality, humor and caring (a fine musician, as well). Rest in peace, Andy
