Thank you so much H.K. - parenting IS the hardest job but can be the most rewarding of all in whatRead More we learn from our kids. Here's wishing all moms everywhere a beautiful Mother's Day!

I loved that Ms. Kim got into it and really had fun. And then teased the kids who soaked her at theRead More Monday morning assembly! I wish we had more staff who participated but I'm so grateful for the ones who did! That water balloon splash was a HIT! Yay to Valley View for a fantastic event! Thanks for posting this!

Poor John Deasy -- he rarely, if ever, does any business in public. IF he can help it. That's hisRead More MO. Look at his history in Malibu -- when he was ordered to conduct business at least pseudo-transparently, he resigned. Oh, yeah, quit his job. Some opined, at the time, he did so in order to avoid further focus, and possible prosecution. No, not your trustworthy public servant. More like I-am-your-superior-in-every-way-Henry-Kissinger kind of guy. And so it goes..............................

Appears as if it was awesome! Still waiting to hear if I won money from my raffle tickets! If I hadRead More been able to attend I would have wanted to wear the real flapper dress which was my great aunt's and I used for a skit in high school at an Old Thyme themed dance...just would have had to track it down from my cousin although neither of us could fit in that dress now made for someone who was under 100 pounds!
Barbara Krause April 12, 2013 at 05:27 am
Truly an amazing list of auction items. I will stop by to buy some raffle tickets today to supportRead More this well respected school.

I did the dragon ride eight or nine times yesterday! I had cupcakes that came from Big Sugar, triedRead More food from around the world, had a terrific latte made by Mark Lizer, listened to three different bands, and did archery. That took an hour of my life and had me laughing out loud (dragon ride part). Just go!

Thats because LAUSD is a malmanaged, pubic union run POS that has failed the very constituency itRead More was created to serve. Break it up now!!!
Alex Daniels April 1, 2013 at 03:22 pm
Carpenters verification issues is just a symptom of the "mice" running to the highestRead More point of a sinking ship..ie LAUSD...People, we have schools in the San Fernando Valley that where once steller and exemplary like Grant and Birmingham, that are rated a "4" out of 10 !!! FAIL!!! Letting these schools continue to operate with such a poor score is like allowing the continued spewing out human refuge in the form of uneducated, ill prepared children. When will we finally put an end to this human disaster and finally rid LA of a broken LAUSD once an for all..Its time to break down this broken public union managed disaster....

There is no need to throw out hate in this situation toward anyone. I can't blame parents that don'tRead More live in the catchment for wanting to get their children in, but there is an appropriate and honest process for that if space allows. Parents that are cheating the system and bypassing the process are teaching their children to do just that..setting poor examples of how to behave. Ms. Kelman has worked hard on behalf of all residents, and her "jubilation" is being misread. I heard her speak at a meeting on behalf of Carpenter, and having just scraped my money together to buy a home near the school, I am so thankful that she and the enrollment committee put their hearts and souls into this serious matter. Lastly, my understanding of the system (Lexis Nexis) that was approved for use was that it simply flagged addresses that looked false. If your address is flagged (i.e. not enough data supports you as a resident of that address) you are not kicked out...just asked to provide more information. They are not using a computer program for final decisions. LAUSD follows up on addresses that show up possibly fraudulent. It was a reasonable request by Carpenter, and one that LAUSD will hopefully put into play for the entire district. If there are no people fraudulently enrolled at Carpenter, then those that apply for the lottery from outside the boundaries will have a better chance to get in. There is a bright side to everything. How about this for a better M.O.: be honest and be nice.

We hope so total transparency in this investigation because my daughters assist to LA ElementaryRead More School where Ms. Moses was principal and her leadership in the school nobody was agree.
This dose not suppues me one bit.

So much for transparency and accountability

Where's my letter? Did they go out yet? Gotta plan. Anyone get one yet?
Georgianna Junco Kelman March 26, 2013 at 04:11 pm
Kristin - it's utterly false! You're 100% equal to the home owners. On other news - a kinderRead More lottery for residents has been effectively averted! We were able to weed out 30 families that attempted to apply for next year using false addresses. This brought our numbers below the allotted 168. Great news! We are in the process of removing the existing 120 fraudulently enrolled! The system is working fair and square!

The statements about giving people in apartments less priority than homeowners is scary to me.Read More Instead of lying about where I was living, I managed to find a small apartment that I can barely afford in order to send my son to Carpenter. It's a struggle, but I believe it to be worth it. If I struggle for all of this and still am made to send my son to a lesser school, I don't know what I'll do.

I'm with you Teresa. I loved grammar school, probably age 10-11. 17 and 18 were good, and collegeRead More was rewarding. My early 20's were hard-no money, no car, living in the bowels of Hollywood, and some lousy jobs that didn't pay. When I moved to Santa Monica and got involved in the restaurant business, things started to improve.
teresa mcgrath March 26, 2013 at 10:54 am
great article mary....i would pick age 10, where one was carefree, old enough for wisdom to beginRead More seeping in, but still childlike....high school and college were next with discovering the world, politics, creativity, and experimenting with the unknown...school became more of a focus in these later years, as a thirst for learning took hold....
Bill Marsh March 28, 2013 at 07:40 pm
Maybe as a member of the city council he can make an attempt at making the money pit AKA LAUSD intoRead More one large Carpenter instead vilifying parents who try to get the quality of education their children deserve.

Seems like a bunch of BS so that realtor's can close deals people!
