Blog: Krekorian, Legislators Work to Reduce Helicopter Noise
In response to federal legislation, Councilmember Krekorian wrote a resolution to officially endorse efforts to protect the Valley from excessive helicopter noise.
Help for helicopter noise may be on the way. Earlier this week, Reps. Adam Schiff, Brad Sherman and Henry Waxman introduced legislation to help protect the San Fernando Valley from the grossly overabundant helicopter traffic that has caused such great disturbance to the quality of life in Council District 2 and beyond. Senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer introduced companion bills in the Senate.
In response, Councilmember Paul Krekorian introduced a resolution this week to support the Los Angeles Residential Helicopter Noise Relief Act of 2013 that
would require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to set guidelines on
flight paths and minimum altitudes for helicopter operations in Los Angeles County. The proposed legislation would exempt law enforcement, emergency
responders and the U.S. military.
"The increasing number of paparazzi, tourist flights and other non-essential helicopters have jammed the skies of Los Angeles, and my constituents and I join you in declaring that enough is enough," Councilmember Krekorian said in a letter to the federal leaders. "When I learned about your legislation, I introduced a resolution in support of your proposed bill, so that the City of Los Angeles can lend its voice in support of your efforts."
