Alfred Johnson opens for Severin Browne's First Friday show at Kulak's Woodshed

LA-based singer/songwriter/keyboardist Alfred Johnson co-wrote with Rickie Lee Jones on her 1979 Platinum Grammy Award winning premiere album containing the hit single, “CHUCK E’s IN LOVE.” He is considered one of this century’s most animated & original songwriters… Both ERNIE WATTS & DIANE REEVES have recorded “COMPANY,” one of Alfred’s finest collaborations… He is a prolific songwriter & has written somewhere around 900 songs. He describes his musical style as very diverse, but the emphasis is always on the lyric. He blends Gospel with ”Rhythm & Bluegrass”, Pop, Rock ‘n’ Soul & even some danceables in a way that only he can deliver them. You just have to experience him for yourself, and then you’ll understand.

…The only thing better than hearing ALFRED JOHNSON'S songs is seeing him perform them live.... which you can do at Kulak's or log on to www.kulakswoodshed.com the night of the show & watching the simultaneous webcast.

Alfred is recognized as a true craftsman of his art. His biggest musical influences are: Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, Dr. John, Randy Newman, Danny O’Keefe, David Wilcox, & Bill Champlin (Sons of Champlin). Alfred has traveled & played all over the world, which explains much about the perspectives which inspire so many of his lyrics. His energetic style of playing the keys brings a wonderful compliment to his music. From the New Orleans sound of POUNZA PROOF to soft, lyric-driven ballads like LOVE DU JOUR, to the tongue-in-cheek DUE: THE W-2 and LOVE’S IN THE LEAD, you will find yourself looking at everyday occurrences in a different way…one that will mesmerize you, yet at the same time give you the ability to laugh at life.

The NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SONGWRITERS is quoted as describing Alfred Johnson as “…a talent of this caliber is a rare treat…”, but most everyone else just knows him as an amazing person and prolific writer with unique spirit and drive…“ Alfred Johnson is one of those writers writers who, like Cole Porter, Marie Caine and Stephen Soundheim, takes your breath away with the sheer craft of it, and makes you proud to be in this often under-acknowledged profession of songwriting.” – HARRIET SHOCK, 1993

“I think he is a genius lyricist, and I really enjoyed his singing. And if that’s him playing the piano, my hats off to [him] in that department, too.” – DAVID FRESHBERG

Please stick around for the great Severin Browne & his band at 9pm. $10 recommended donation goes to keeping Kulak's Woodshed open. You can also make donations thru paypal. Please email Alfred during the show.. He'd love that....
