As my high school class prepares to celebrate another landmark reunion, I am reminded of how times have changed, especially the use and meaning of certain words. We who grew up in the 1950s were insulated and protected by our surroundings, our neighborhood, our school, our parents and by society. We were reared in innocence and knew the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. We were sober, hard-working students who enjoyed participating in school and sports activities. A good mind was enhanced by having an active body There were undercurrents of prejudice and discrimination during the post World War 11 days as there probably were in many communities. As aging seniors (not the academic 12th grader kind), we celebrate our respect, understanding and love for one another. Bravi!
The meaning of certain words in our day:

Gay – Merry, light-hearted.
Drone – A male honeybee or a dull, continuous humming sound.

Coke – A shortened name brand for a soft drink called Coca-Cola.
Cell – A small room or small group of people working for a larger organization.
Digital – Pertaining to fingers or using numerical digits.
Crack – A split or opening (pre-plumbing professional’s attire)
Mouse – A small rodent.
Awesome – Profoundly reverential.
Application – A request to be hired.
Leak – To let water in or out.
Boob – A stupid person (Plural – boobs – stupid people).
Pot – A container in which to boil water (to cook corn on the cob or pasta).
Apple – A fruit – an autumnal treat picked from a tree.
Weed – A plant not valued for use nor beauty.
Yahoo – A brute (as in Gulliver’s Travels)
Windows – Transparent or translucent – glass -- eye holes in a wall or door.
NB - Charles Perrault translated the classic Cinderella in 1697 and
mistakenly wrote the word Voir as glass (in the old French version
the word literally meant ermine). Cinderella has been wearing
glass slippers ever since. It’s just as well because if she were
wearing ermine slippers PETA would have had her story banned.
