6 Canadians Take Wrong Turn Down L.A. River

Police said they were heading for Long Beach in canoes.

Six people in two canoes were fished out of the Los Angeles River on Friday afternoon in Studio City.

"They saw the police helicopter overhead and they said they didn't need any help," said Richard Adair, the Los Angeles Police officer who arrived at the scene at the Vineland Avenue bridge over the river. Nevertheless, the Los Angeles Fire Department helped them out of the torrential waters just before 1 p.m.

"Of course, it's illegal and very dangerous to go down the Los Angeles River," said the officer. "They all were cited for trespassing."

They did not tip over, nor were any of them injured, but the river was already traveling very fast and with more rains on the way, it could have turned into a deadly situation as it has in the past for people who have tried boating down the river.

"They said they were heading to Long Beach," Adair said.

Did they not know how deadly the waters were? Did they know how far Long Beach was from the San Fernando Valley?

"Well, they said they were from Canada," Adair added.
